Profile

Stephen Gallacher enjoyed a glittering amateur career which saw him win the Scottish match play and stroke play titles as well as the European Amateur Championship before turning professional in 1995 and winning a Tour card in his first attempt the same year.

The amiable Scot, who let his swing do the talking, created history by becoming the first man to mount a successful defence of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic after a final round that demonstrated the value of patience, lighting up the 25th anniversary celebrations of the event.

Having achieved the pre-season goal of breaking into the top 50 in the world, Gallacher, a three-time winner on the European Tour, made a superb Masters debut in 2014, finishing in a tie for 34th.

The West Lothian golfer won the 2004 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, exactly 35 years after his uncle, the former Ryder Cup Captain Bernard Gallacher, took his maiden professional title when he saw off Graeme McDowell in a play-off, delighting the home crowds at St Andrews. In February 2013, Gallacher ended a 201-tournament wait for his second victory on the European Tour, when he won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic by three strokes.
